a departure from rational thought or behavior. It means basically to err, to make mistakes, or more specifically to have fixed ideas which are not true. The word is also used in its scientific sense. It means departure from a straight line. If a line should go from A to B, then if it is aberrated it would go from A to some other point, to some other point, to some other point, to some other point, to some other point, and finally arrive at B. Taken in this sense, it would also mean the lack of straightness or to see crookedly as, for example, a man sees a horse but thinks he sees an elephant. Aberrated conduct would be wrong conduct, or conduct not supported by reason. When a person has engrams, these tend to deflect what would be his normal ability to perceive truth and bring about an aberrated view of situations which then would cause an aberrated reaction to them. Aberration is opposed to sanity, which would be its opposite. From the Latin, aberrare, to wander from; Latin, ab, away, errare, to wander.

A genetic or environmentally produced variation on the usual form of the species. For example very cold conditions can produce very dark forms of some species.

An individual with a clearly abnormal phenotype which occurs very rarely in a species. The unusual appearance of an aberration is usually the result of a freakish developmental abnormality or a rare mutation. To qualify as an aberration (rather than a form or morph), an individual must exhibit characteristics which are shown by no more than 0.01% of the members of its species. Aberrations are popularly referred to as "sports."

Aberration is a 1997 film directed by Tim Boxell, about a woman trying to escape from mutant lizards in the woods. The story is about mutated reptiles that live in isolation and breed to be strong. The lizards look like geckos and they live in a nest or bubble that is covered by slime.

Coming over a year after Oakland, CA band Neurosis' debut album, the three song EP Aberration is still firmly rooted in hardcore and thrash, but you can hear the beginnings of the band's evolution beyond those genres, which led to their foundational work, starting with 1992's Souls at Zero, in what became known as post-metal. The hint of things to come is especially plain in the experimental and decidedly unpunk sound of the first minute of B side Pollution, the only track from this EP that made it onto the band's sophomore album, The Word as Law.
