Definitions for "Abstracting"
To describe key features or characteristics in summary form.
the act of summarizing information to make it easier and faster to search through. Journal articles have well defined abstracts (though shorter items like letters to the editor are not really worth the effort to abstract). Web pages do not, hence the difficulty in searching through a large list of results when using a typical WWW search engine.
Creating a representation of the salient features of an information element. An information element could be any information-carrying artifact, including a document, a segment of a document, an annotation, or even a group of elements. The representation could take different forms, including a well-chosen name, a summary, or an object and attributes representation of features. In the context of sensemaking, sensemakers often search for cogent abstractions to guide them in simplifying and structuring information. See also summarizing and naming.
