It is generally similar to a straight non-negotiable bill of lading and is used for similar purposes.

It also shows details of the consignee so they can be contact when the goods arrive. Note that unlike the Bill of Lading, an Airway Bill is not a fully negotiable instrument.

Similar to a bill of lading, it is used for the transport of goods by air. Unlike a bill of lading, it does not offer title of the goods. The exporter can exercise his 'right of disposal' at anytime by presenting his copy of the air waybill to the airline and, as such, he can: stop the goods at any point of their journey; have the goods delivered to a different consignee to the one mentioned in the air waybill; or have the shipment returned. Nevertheless, it allows the importer to collect the goods against identification.
Also called AIR CONSIGNMENT NOTE. A bill of lading issued by the airline that covers both domestic and international flights transporting goods to a specified destination. Technically, it is a non-negotiable instrument of air transport that serves as a receipt for the shipper, indicating that the carrier has accepted the goods listed therein and obligates itself to carry the consignment to the airport of destination according to specified conditions. An airway bill is a consignment note completed by the exporter and issued by the airline. If the goods are addressed to the name on the airway bill (i.e. the buyer) then the goods will be handed over on proof of identification provided freight charges have been settled.
The Airway Bill replaced the previously known air consignment note, and it fulfils virtually the same function for Air Freight as the Bill of Lading does for Sea Freight. It contains information about the consignment and, by law, is required to be made out by the consignor or his agent.
