Alfred Emanuel "Al" Smith (December 30, 1873 – October 4, 1944) was Governor of New York, and Democratic U.S. presidential candidate in 1928. He lost the election to Herbert Hoover. He was a prominent Catholic and a leading Democrat.
Al Smith (March 2, 1902 - November 24, 1986) was an American cartoonist whose work included a run on the comic strip Mutt and Jeff. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Smith was the art editor for the syndicate department of the New York World from 1920 to 1930. He then moved to work for a syndicate company where in 1932 "Mutt and Jeff" creator Bud Fisher allowed him to take over the ongoing creating of the cartoon.
