Coffee is not strictly a new crop in Australia as a viable coffee industry existed in the 1890â€(tm)s and 1920â€(tm)s, with production at centres spread over 1500km of the eastern Queensland coastline and extending into northern New South Wales. However high labour costs and competition from the developing sugar industry lead to the demise of the industry, it was not until 1970â€(tm)s that commercial interest was revived. The Skybury plantation is situated on the slopes of the Atherton Tablelands at an elevation of about 1800 feet in a frost free area.
