(Arabic) A gate; door; entrance
The title, meaning "Gate," assumed by Siyyid `Alí-Muhammad, who was the Prophet-Founder of the Bábí Faith and the Forerunner of Bahá'u'lláh. Born 20 October 1819, the Báb proclaimed Himself to be the Promised One of Islám and announced that His mission was to alert the people to the imminent advent of "Him Whom God shall make manifest," namely, Bahá'u'lláh. Because of these claims, the Báb was executed by order of Náziri'd-Dín Sháh on 9 July 1850.
(bawb), The (1819-50): Born 'Alí-Muhammad, he declared himself the Qá'im, the Promised One of Islam in 1844 and was executed as a heretic. He wrote extensively, especially about "Him Whom God would make Manifest," a messenger of God he said would succeed him.
Literally the "Gate", the title assumed by Mírzá 'Alí-Muhammad (1819-1850) after the Declaration of His Mission in Shíráz in May 1844. He was the Founder of the Bábí Faith and the Herald of Bahá'u'lláh.
