A feature that automatically compensates for high background light in order to give better detail to darker areas of the picture.
This is a feature of cameras that automatically adjusts the image to compensate for bright sunlight or bright lights, to give more detail on the darker areas of the image. For example to focus on detail of a face of a person that has the sunlight shining from behind.
A feature on newer CCD cameras which electronically compensates for high background lighting to give detail which would normally be silhouetted.
