(n.) A gun which loads through the breech end of the barrel. The advantages to being a breechloader include being able to load more quickly and with less effort, a greater rate of fire, and being able to easily load the gun from awkward positions, or while mounted. Until the invention of the metallic cartridge, most breechloaders were impractical. A major problem they had was severe gas leakage.
