These are: coke oven gas, coal tar, benzol, naphthalene, ammonium sulphate and ammonia. As regards other iron and steel metallurgy plant, the main by-products are gas and blast furnace slag and steelworks gas.

In addition to the main articles being made, the production process also creates products that are used as raw materials or for fuel.

Secondary products which are obtained from the processing of a raw material and have commercial value. They may be the residues of the gas production process, such as coke, tar and ammonia, or they may be the result of further processing of such residues, such as ammonium sulphate.

The clean parts other than muscle tissue derived from beef or pork ("meal by-products") or chicken or turkey ("poultry by-products"). It includes, but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, liver, blood, bone, and stomach. It does not include hair, feathers, horns, teeth or hoof.

Secondary products that arise in a manufacturing process. In the wood products industry these include sawdust and wood chips. Wood industry by-products can be used as raw materials or as biofuel.
