The cardiotocograph is more commonly known as Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM). A cardiotocograph measures the fetal heart rate and the frequency of uterine contractions, using two separate disc-shaped transducers. An ultrasound transducer measures the fetal heartbeat.
