A problem solving methodology which is used successfully in many disciplines (e.g., in law, in medicine, in architectural design) which relies on existing, related cases (in DODEs stored in a catalog).
is a branch of artificial intelligence that attempts to combine the power of narrative with the codification of knowledge on computers.
A problem-solving system that relies on stored representations of previously solved problems and their solutions.
A method for leveraging prior experiences to identify current problems or decisions and developing solutions for such problems or decisions based on those of the prior experiences.
An approach to computer reasoning that uses knowledge from a library of similar cases, rather than by accessing a knowledge base containing more generalised knowledge, such as a set of rules. See also: Artificial intelligence, Expert system.
Technique whereby cases similar to the current problem are retrieved and their solutions modified to work on the current problem.
Case-based reasoning (CBR), broadly construed, is the process of solving new problems based on the solutions of similar past problems. An auto mechanic who fixes an engine by recalling another car that exhibited similar symptoms is using case-based reasoning. A lawyer who advocates a particular outcome in a trial based on legal precedents or a judge who creates case law is using case-based reasoning.
