A Library of Congress program that provides bibliographic data for new books in advance of publication. Records are created from information supplied by publishers.
Card catalog information printed on the copyright page; a service provided by the Library of Congress for books extensively used in libraries.
Data for a library catalog card, printed on the copyright page, obtained from the U.S. Library of Congress.
A Cataloging in Publication record (a.k.a. CIP data) is a bibliographic record prepared by the Library of Congress for a book that has not yet been published. When the book is published, the publisher includes the CIP data on the copyright page, thereby facilitating book processing for libraries and book dealers.
Cataloging data which appears on the back of the title page of a book. Prior to publication, publishers provide data to the Library of Congress whose catalogers determine the classification number and catalog entries for the book.
In publishing and library science, Cataloging in Publication (CIP, or Cataloguing in Publication) is basic cataloging data for a work, prepared in advance of publication by the national library of the country where the work is principally published or by the library of a publishing organisation such as a government department. The name reflects the usual practice of including that information in the corresponding publication -- in the case of books, near the bottom of the copyright page, and can be very useful for less experienced cataloguers when adding such items to their collections. The national libraries' CIP staffs restrict the range of publications that CIP will be prepared for, for instance requiring access to assistance from the publisher's staff.
