A condition in which a person may have normal hearing but, difficulty comprehending and integrating information that is heard. This disorder occurs when the ear and the brain do not coordinate fully. The causes of this disorder are varied and can include head trauma, lead poisoning, possibly chronic ear infections and other unknown reasons.
A disorder that occurs when the ear and the brain do not coordinate fully. A CAPD is a physical hearing impairment, but one which does not show up as a hearing loss on routine screenings or an audiogram. Instead, it affects the hearing system beyond the ear, whose job it is to separate a meaningful message from non-essential background sound and deliver that information with good clarity to the intellectual centers of the brain (the central nervous system).
A physiological impairment limiting the ability to distinguish sounds.
Effective hearing impairment resulting from neurological damage to auditory processing areas of the brain and/or auditory nerve. The pure tone loss may be mild or moderate; however, the ability to understand speech or discriminate may be impaired.
An impairment in the ability of the central auditory system to process and utilize auditory signals.
inability of individuals with normal hearing and intelligence to differentiate, recognize, or understand sounds.
A CAPD is a receptive language disorder. It refers to difficulties in the decoding and storing of auditory information - usually incoming verbal messages.
A condition in which an individual has difficulty comprehending and integrating information that is heard, although hearing is normal. Central auditory processing disorder occurs when the ear and the brain do not coordinate fully. The causes of this disorder are varied and can include head trauma, lead poisoning, possibly chronic ear infections and other unknown reasons. Because there are many different possibilities or even combinations of causes each child must be individually assessed.
inability to differentiate, recognize, or understand sounds; hearing and intelligence are normal.
Hearing may be inconsistent and vary from day to day, because the ability of the brain to process sound is affected.
