Software that allows applications and printer drivers to access information about the color characteristics of monitors, printers, and scanners. The Color Management System uses the color information to provide accurate and consistent color to the output device.
Any system that is used to ensure that an image produced by a scanner looks the same on screen and when printed on a printer, no matter what brand of monitor or printer is used. When all the elements (scanner, monitor, and printer) are properly configured, the color management system should make sure that the image from the scanner looks the same on screen and when printed out, at least within the limitations of the screen and printer.
a set of software tools that tries to maintain the appearance of colors as they are reproduced on various devices
a set of tools that help to manage the transition from color space to color space
a system of hardware and software products
Abbreviated CMS. A CMS is a set of software designed to increase the accuracy and consistency of color between a scanner, display and printer. A CMS consists of: "Device profiles" which document the performance of the particular scanner, display and printer you may own. A "device transformation engine" that coverts data between the scanner, display and printer. A "gamut compensation mechanism" that addresses differences between the capabilities of the scanner, display and printer. And a "device independent color space" through which all color transformations occur.
A technology that creates color profiles of the devices in the workflow - the monitors involved, the capture devices and the printer to the specific inks and papers - so that color accuracy can be maintained throughout the printmaking process.
A set of software utilities that help calibrate color on input and output devices like displays, printers, and scanners. Color management systems control the accurate conversion of colors from RGB to CMYK, in printing and display. (also see ICC, ColorSync, calibration, CMYK, and RGB)
Examples of color management systems are ColorSync for Mac-operating systems and ICM 2.0 for Windows. The color management system converts (translates) the color space of one device into the color space of a different device. Generally, it is sufficient to use a device independent color space for this process.
Software to facilitate manipulation of color images and ICC profiles to obtain appropriate transformed images.
A combination of software and or hardware devices used to produce accurate color results throughout a digital-imaging system.
