Stands for catechol-O-methyltransferase. It is one of the two main enzymes responsible for the breakdown of levodopa before it reaches the brain

Otherwise known as catechol-0-mythyltransferase, it is one of the two main enzymes (the other one being amino acid decarboxylase - AADC) responsible for the breakdown of levodopa before it reaches the brain. COMT breaks down levodopa into 30-0-methyldopa before it can be converted to dopamine in the brain.
