The epidermis is a thin outer layer made up of cells called corneocytes, which are packed with fibrous protein called Keratin. Corneocytes are found in abundance in the thick layers of the epidermis that protect the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet and also in the fingernails, toenails and hair.
