Definitions for "Counterstamp"
Symbols, design(s) or lettering punched on a coin to change its value, usage or purpose. Also known as a countermark. See also surcharge.
A design, group of letters, or other mark stamped on one coin for special identification or advertising purposes. Counterstamped coins are graded the way regular (uncounterstamped) coins are, but the nature and condition of the counterstamp must also be described.
A stamp or impression placed on a coin after it has left the Mint of origin. Counterstamps were frequently used as advertising gimmicks on Large Cents and other coins. The counterstamp leaves a permanent impression on the metal and may hurt the value of the coin. It may also help the value, as in the case of an Ephriam Brasher counterstamp.
