That portion of a plant, such as corn stalks, shucks, leaves and cobs, left in the field after harvest. It used to be called “trash” until some clever person discovered that leaving the residue on the field significantly reduces erosion. See “conservation tillage.
The portion of a crop remaining after harvest of seed or other primary plant parts. It may be managed for grazing and/or ground cover and to replenish soil organic matter levels.
Remaining plant material of the harvested crop
