Definitions for "Depolarisation"
A previously polarised cell membrane loses its charge. Whereas the mebrane may have had a potential of -90mV, the elctrical charges balance out and the overall potential trends towards 0mV. However it rarely returns to precisely 0mV and often becomes slightly positive. Close this window
is a shift in the membrane potential of a cell to a less negative value. It increases the likelihood that a neuron will reach the critical firing threshold for an action potential and so is excitatory in nature
a loss of polarity or polarization
