a compression engine, meaning it squeezes the fuel/air mixture until the mixture builds up enough heat that it ignites on its own, which is a much more powerful explosion inside the cylinder than a gas engine experiences
a dirtier engine than a gasoline one
Diesel is a fuel, which like gasoline, is refined from oil. It is heavier and oilier than gasoline, and has a higher energy density. It is generally cheaper, too, because it needs less refining than gasoline. The diesel engine is a high-efficiency engine that uses higher compression than gasoline engines. The efficiency of the engine and the energy density of the fuel, means that diesel engines generally get better mileage than equivalent gasoline engines.
A petroleum-based fuel. Diesel exhaust is an important source of particulates and other pollutants that adversely affect human health.
A colourless fuel very similar to gasoil comprising a mixture of compounds (predominantly hydrocarbons), distilled from crude oil and used in road vehicles. Also known as DERV (Diesel Engined Road Vehicle) fuel.
A type of fuel that is a mixture of heavier hydrocarbons from the refining of petroleum. A typical hydrogen to carbon ratio is 1.7 to 1.
An internal combustion engine that fires without the use of an ignition system. Diesel engines use high compression to fire the mixture in the cylinders. Uses oil rather than petrol, no spark ignition system.
a middle distillate fuel used in diesel engines.
a light oil fuel used in diesel engines.
oil-burning engine in which ignition is produced by the heat of compressed air
(1) A type of engine popular on boats. (2) The fuel that powers diesel engines.
Internal combustion engine or locomotive.
a petroleum-based fuel which is burned in engines ignited by compression rather than spark; commonly used for heavy duty engines including buses and trucks.
A petroleum product used as fuel in diesel engines.
Aroma constituent reminiscent of diesel/petrol/gasoline engine fumes. Occasionally detected in botrytis affected sweet or semi-dry wines such as Riesling. Considered a flaw if too obtrusive (see also petrol).
Diesel or diesel fuel is a specific fractional distillate of fuel oil (mostly petroleum) that is used as fuel in a diesel engine invented by German engineer Rudolf Diesel. The term typically refers to fuel that has been processed from petroleum, but increasingly, alternatives such as biodiesel or biomass to liquid (BTL) or gas to liquid (GTL) diesel that are not derived from petroleum are being developed and adopted.
