the phenomenon whereby each bystander's sense of responsibility to help decreases as the number of witnesses increases
The tendency for persons in a group situation to fail to take action (as in an emergency) because others are present, thus diffusing the responsibility for acting. A major factor in inhibiting bystanders from intervening in emergencies.
