ead rrival. In New York, only doctors are allowed to actually pronounce someone dead. EMS personnel may refer to a person with no vital signs as a "possible DOA" while responding to the scene. If the patient is found with obvious signs of death and it is evident that resuscitation is not possible, the ambulance crew may be released by the police or by a physician. Otherwise, resuscitation is begun and the patient is transported to the nearest hospital. (see 500, Workup)
