North Carolina state law uses a prudent layperson definition of emergency medical condition. That is, state law considers certain acute symptoms to be emergency medical conditions if a prudent layperson, possessing an average knowledge of health and medicine, thinks that in the absence of immediate medical attention, the medical condition is likely to place him or her (or in the case of a pregnant woman, her unborn child) in serious jeopardy, or cause serious impairment to bodily functions or bodily organs.
