Definitions for "Exponential notation"
expressing numbers or algebraic expressions with exponents or powers; for example, expressed in exponential notation 3 X 10^+ 4 X 10^ + 5 is 345
A symbolic way of showing how many times a number or variable is used as a factor. In the notation 5 3, the exponent 3 shows that 5 is a factor used three times; that is 5 3 = 5 x 5 x 5 =125.
(4) A shorthand way of representing repeated multiplication of the same number. In the example below the small raised 3, called the exponent, indicates how many times the number 2, called the base, is used as a factor. Example: 23 is exponential notation for 2 x 2 x 2.
