Any bird of the genus Phœnicopterus. The flamingoes have webbed feet, very long legs, and a beak bent down as if broken. Their color is usually red or pink. The American flamingo is P. ruber; the European is P. antiquorum.
large pink to scarlet web-footed wading bird with down-bent bill; inhabits brackish lakes
It's hard to imagine Florida without flamingos; they are even the symbol of the state lottery. But the truth is there's a better chance of seeing the plastic variety on a lawn than the real bird in the wild. You will see plenty at our state parks, sanctuaries and zoos, where the non-Florida natives have found happy homes.
