A dais, or elevated platform; the highest step of the altar; a landing in a staircase.

The platform upon which the altar rests, where the priest stands to celebrate the Holy Eucharist; also called the predella. The highest of three steps is known as the Priest's Step; the other two being the Deacon's (second step) and the Subdeacon's being the bottom or first step.
