The process of gathering information using standardized, published tests or instruments in conjunction with specific administration and interpretation procedures, and used to make general instructional decisions.
structured, infrequent measure of learner achievement.  Formal assessment usually means using exams. Informal continuous assessment:  less structured:  observing learners on a regular basis and recording what we observe. Informal continuous assessment:  more structured:  setting up assessment situations periodically and recording what we assess.
