Definitions for "Glucose Intolerance"
a carbohydrate intolerance of variable severity: a state in which fasting plasma is 140 mg/dl and the 30, 60, or 90 minute plasma glucose concentration following a dose of glucose (e.g., from a glucose tolerance test) exceeds 200 mg/dl. Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is when the fasting plasma glucose is less than 126 mg/dl and the 2-hour glucose level is between 140 and 199 mg/dl.
When glucose tolerance is normal, eating sugar causes adequate insulin secretion. The blood sugar level rises slightly and then returns to normal in 3-4 hours. Glucose intolerance is an abnormal response to sugar ingestion. The blood sugar level may rise too high or not high enough, or it may remain high for several hours. In the hypoglycemic reaction, after a brief rise the serum glucose falls below normal, usually due to excessive insulin secretion.
a pre-diabetic state in which the blood glucose is higher than normal but not high enough to warrant the diagnosis of diabetes. Can be effectively treated by weight loss
