Deriving its name from the Norwegian Fjord, this is a method of cutting fabric and removing threads to create an openwork mesh of embroidery. Geometric designs are based on Kloster blocks of embroidered squares. Hardanger fabric can be wool or cotton and is usually 22 pairs of threads to the inch.
