Instrumental activities of daily living. More complex activities not necessarily done everyday but important to independent living. They include preparing meals, doing housework, doing laundry, shopping, using transportation, managing money, using the telephone, and doing home maintenance.
The NHIS collected information on the respondent's need for assistance in performing instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). The IADls include: doing household chores, doing necessary business, shopping, and getting around for other purposes. People who need assistance in ADL were not asked about IADL (see also ADL).
