Independent Medical Examination. In many situations, an employer and insurance company will want to have an injured employee seen by a particular physician in order to obtain on objective evaluation of the employee's health. An employee may initially be seen by a company physician, or a physician of their own choosing, However, if litigation commences over the extent of the employee's injuries (or whether the employee has any injury at all), the employer and insurer will likely be entitled to require the employee to appear for an IME with a physician of their choosing.
Insurer's refer to this as an "independent medical examination." Attorneys representing injured people refer to this as an "insurance medical examination." An insurer may require the injured person to attend an IME under the provision of the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Policy or by a defendant after a lawsuit is filed in court. See Civil Rule 3S Examination. In either instant, the insurance company selects the doctor of their choice and pays for the examination.
Independent Medical Exam. A medical exam performed by an independent physician. It includes a brief review of the patient history and treatment to date and a physical examination of the patient. The purpose of the examination is to assist the physician in making a medical determination as to causation, current physical impairment, and the necessity of current and future treatment.
Independent Medical Evaluation. An examination carried out by an impartial health care provider, generally board certified, for the purpose of resolving a dispute related to the nature and extent of an illness or injury.

a medical-legal examination, performed by a physician, who is hired by a lawyer or insurance company; creates a report which can be used to settle a lawsuit or some workers' compensation cases.
Independent Medical-legal Examination. A report requested either a plaintiff attorney (representing a patient) or a defense attorney (representing an insurance company) in a personal injury dispute.
Independent Medical Examination is an examination by an impartial health care provider usually for the purpose of resolving a dispute.
