In the Incident_Command_System (ICS) the Incident Commander's (IC) responsibility is the overall management of an emergency incident. On most incidents the command activity is carried out by a single Incident Commander. The IC is selected by qualifications and experience.
As it is related to the fire service, the Incident Commander overseas all operations at an incident. Most times these are fires, but they can also include Hazardous Material incidents or major accidents were there is some sort of technical rescue involved or multiple patients.
