The high-speed Internet used by educational and research institutions. Use is restricted to specific functions such as research. Other names used for Internet2 are “Abilene”, “vBNS”, and GPN.
Internet 2 is a nationwide project to develop the next generation of computer network applications to facilitate the research and education missions of universities. UC Davis has joined over 180 leading universities, in partnership with industry and government, to develop and deploy the advanced network applications and technologies that will comprise Internet 2. For more information, see the Internet 2 Web site.
"Internet 2 is an effort to develop an improved network among universities that is one hundred times as fast as today's system . . . ." (From Chronicle of Higher Education, 4/418/97, p. A23)
A project to develop new technologies for high-performance computer networking. While specifically developed to facilitate research and educational purposes, the involvement of research, commercial and government organisations also aims to distribute these technology into the wider community.
Internet2 is a development project funded by over 100 American universities to develop leading edge Internet applications and the next version of the Internet Protocol (IP).
A new network originally formed for educational purposes. Internet 2 has the same purpose as the original Internet, but expands the volume of information that can be transferred across it. It is being developed primarily for educational purposes, and hopefully will be spam free.
A project intended to facilitate and coordinate the development, deployment, operation and technology transfer of advanced, network-based applications and network services to further U.S. leadership in research and higher education and accelerate the availability of new services and applications on the Internet.
A network that replaces what the original Internet was for—the academic network. Internet 2 acts as a testbed for many of the latest and greatest technologies. The universities stress-test Internet 2 to determine how applications perform and which technologies suit which applications or management purposes best.
