A Pali word not to be confused with jnana or wisdom. It refers to a state of meditative absorption that can be attained through the development of calm. Traditionally, four such states are mentioned: desirelessness, non-thought, equanimity, and neither pain nor pleasure.

Absorption in a single object or preoccupation. Rupa-jhana refers to absorption in a physical sensation; arupa-jhana, to absorption in a mental notion or state.
