A feature of cells undergoing necrosis, or cell death caused by irreversible cell damage. During necrosis, the nucleus first condenses into chromatin in a process called pyknosis. Next, the chromatin is degraded by enzymes (DNAses, Deoxyribonucleases) in a step called karyolysis, resulting in karyorrhexis.
