The soft woolly hair which covers most parts of the mammal fetus, and in man is shed before or soon after birth.
The fine hair that covers a fetus from about 26 weeks, and is sometimesstill present at birth. A baby born at term will usually shed the hair by the end of the first week after birth.
Latin lana = wool, hence, the fine downy hair on the skin of the foetus, or cheeks.
