Definitions for "Linear energy transfer"
Keywords:  photons, ionizing, kev, particle, mev
Refers to the rate of energy transfer (and thus damage) per unit at distance travelled. For example, alpha is high-LET radiation, while photons and electrons are low-LET radiation. mass number (symbolized A): The sum of the number of protons and the number of neutrons in a nucleus.
A measure of the rate at which an energetic particle transfers energy to the surrounding medium. Alpha particles have a high LET, while beta particles have a lower LET. Generally expressed in units of MeV per centimetre of path length.
Average amount of energy lost per unit track length by the individual particles or photons in radiation passing through an absorbing medium.
