Mateship is an important element of anglo-Australian self-understanding and has emblematic value as a founding myth on the frontier of white settlement of Australia and solidarity against (oppressive) authority. Russell Ward's in "The Australian Legend" analysed the development of the concept. Later writers such as Humphrey Mc Queen have challenged his analysis.
