A unique number that identifies a merchant for reference purposes in transaction processes. It is provided by the Acquirer and is sometimes also called simply merchant number.
This number is generated by a processor/acquirer and is specific to each individual merchant location. This number is used to identify the merchant during processing of daily transactions, rejects, adjustments, chargebacks, end-of-month processing fees, etc.
The number a financial institution assigns to the merchant to individually designate the type of business activity of that merchant.
Do not confuse the MID with the Humboldt Bank merchant processing account number (the 16-digit number prefixed by "419404"). This acronym refers to the FDC-assigned number that identifies the merchant to the equipment they use to process transactions. A merchant with a Humboldt Bank merchant processing account number who uses several terminals at his location would have one MID and several TID's (See "Terminal Identification Number").
An identification number assigned to each member merchant of an acquiring organization, such as a financial institution, Independent Sales Organization (ISO), Merchant Service Provider (MSP) or processor.
A number each merchant is provided under the card acceptance agreement, which is unique to that merchant.
