Mew comes from the Latin mutare, meaning ‘to changeâ€(tm) and the mews were the place in London where the kingâ€(tm)s hawks were at one time confined while they molted or ‘changed.â€(tm) The royal stables then replaced the hawkâ€(tm)s lair and thereafter any lane or open area where a group of stables was situated was referred to as a mews.
