Proprio Coming from the Latin phrase meaning "of his own initiative," a motu proprio is an apostolic letter which is legislative in nature and addressed to the entire Church, often treating an administrative matter. Recently the Pope issued a motu proprio amending church law in the matter of certain serious offenses including clerical sexual abuse.
