Definitions for "Nasals"
nasals are consonants created by blocking the mouth with the tongue or lips, lowering the soft palate (velum), and allowing the air to come out through the nose, as in English /m/ mouse and /n/ nous. Vowels may be nasalised by allowing some air to come out through the nose and mouth at the same time, as in French // son (sound).
Phonemes that are made when air is being forced out of the nose instead of the mouth, causing the nose to vibrate. Examples: |m|, |n|, |ng|.
The nasals are a pair of bones in the skull of many animals. They are connected to each other in the midline of the skull, and are usually bordered by the premaxilla, maxilla, and frontal bone, though this may vary with species.
