Definitions for "Nonconsumptive use"
The use of a resource that does not reduce the supply. For instance, bird watching is a non-consumptive use of wildlife.
Instream use of water that does not reduce the supply; or, removing water and returning it to the source without reducing the supply (e.g. navigation and fisheries).
The withdrawal of water that ultimately is returned to its source; includes most of the water used by municipalities, hydroelectric plants and nuclear plants. Ninety-five percent of Great Lakes water is returned after use.
