Definitions for "Orchestra Pit"
This is an enclosed area generally extending across the breadth of the stage and at a lower elevation so that the musicians do not block the audience’s view. The floor of most modern orchestra pits, like the Rep’s can, be elevated so that when not being used for live music it can either accommodate more rows of seats or, at full elevation, enlarge the working area of the stage.
An area between the stage and audience, usually depressed, where musicians sit, so the audience can hear the music and see the performance over the heads of the musicians.
