Open Systems Interconnection reference model. A framework developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO) to provide worldwide standards for computer communications.
Open Systems Interconnection model The standard for transmitting messages between any two points in a network. Its purpose is to guide product developers so that their products will consistently work with other products. The model defines seven layers of functions that occur at each end of a communication link: 7--application, 6--presentation, 5--session, 4--transport, 3--network, 2--data link, and 1--physical.
