An extra-oral technique, using a moving x-ray tube to obtain a radiograph, or x-ray, containing the upper and lower teeth, as wall as the surrounding and supporting bones of the face. This is done on a single film and flattens out the face; thus, it is called a "panoramic view".

These are taken using a special machine that takes the x-ray of the jaws with the film outside of the mouth and it shows a larger area at a time- all the teeth on one film. It is generally good for looking for teeth, and for identifying cysts, infections, impacted teeth, or fractures. The resolution is generally not as good as the individual films to show cavities.
