Definitions for "Polyhydroxybutyrate"
A biopolymer, with physical properties similar to polystyrene, originally discovered in the bacterium Alcaligenes eutropus. The gene coding for this compound has since been transformed into both other bacteria and into some crop plants in order to produce a source of renewable raw material for the plastics industry. It is rapidly degraded by soil micro-organisms.
PHB has properties similar to those of polypropylene, however it is stiffer and more brittle.
Biodegradable polyester used in degradable plastic products.
