These are pressurized gases used to propel the contents of aerosol sprays from the can, through the nozzle giving a fine mist. Until recently CFC's were widely used in this role, but they have now been replaced with less damaging chemicals. Most propellants contribute to global warming and are often highly flammable, e.g. Butane.
