A driver who is entitled to entry into the race, but has not driven fast enough to qualify for the race. Provisions are based upon drivers who are in the top 25 in season points, past race winners, and past series champions.
A starting spot awarded to a driver who did not qualify for a race based on his speed. NASCAR awards starting positions 37 thru 42 using this system. These provisional starts need to be earned through past performances. The 43rd position is left for a past champion who was unable to qualify. If there are no past champions who need to use it, the position is used with the regular provisional starts.

A ball played when it seems likely that the preceding shot is lost or out of bounds. It will count, plus a penalty.
A second ball struck in the event that the first ball is lost or out of bounds. If the first ball is playable, the provisional ball is picked up. If the first ball is not playable, the provisional ball is played and penalty strokes apply. Hitting the provisional ball often speeds up the pace of play.
A figure in your Tax Return which is estimated because the final figure is not yet available. If your Tax Return contains a provisional figure, you must tell the Inland Revenue what the final amount is as soon as it is known.
