On a cord-bound book, the horizontal raised bands on the spine, usually of a leather binding. Not often used in books published today, except for quality leather-bound editions.
Horizontal bands across the back (spine) of a book. Such bands were once the result of the method of binding used; today they are sometimes added for decorative effect.
Ridges on the spine of a book where the leather of the cover is nipped up over the cords of the sewing.
